Haunted Houses

Picture
G.A. Boeckling's Eerie Estate
Location:
Former CP Office adjacent to Planet Snoopy
Debut: 2009
The Eerie Estate contains dark secrets that harken back to the days of G.A. Boeckling himself. As you enter this stately manor, you'll find that these dark secrets have finally been revealed. At the beginning, you'll enter inter a drawing room that has a portrait of none other than Mr. Boeckling, but don't be too distracted because other denizens of a more sinister nature lurk behind every turn. Next you'll enter into the sitting room where ghosts of all types wait for your arrival. As you move further into the house you'll enter rooms such as the wine cellar, the library, the kitchen, and the dining room. Each room presents new terrors that try to drive you away from this ancient home. Each resident of the estate is unique in their own way. When you enter the financial office, you'll be greeted by another spirit calling for his money or when you enter into the game room you'll find a card shark that bet more than he could pay. Even the cloakroom has residents that are none too pleased by your arrival. If you dare, you can also partake of a meal in the estate and be served by reluctant servants of the estate.

The Eerie Estate resides in the old Cedar Point offices adjacent to Planet Snoopy. Each room throughout this indoor haunt is heavily themed and crafted to look like a classic manor. Each room has a specific theme with specific Screamsters that inhabit it. Eerie Estate may be the most themed and specialized of all the haunts at Cedar Point. The estate utilizes theatrical lighting, heavy theming, and light fog to create a stunning visual and emotional experience throughout the entire haunt. For an additional fee, one can also partake in a dinner within the hunt before it opens to the general public.

Once inside, visitors will pass through a number of different locations including classrooms, offices, the cafeteria, the school dance and even the boys locker room. The haunt takes extraordinary steps in order to recreate the feel of a high school as guests journey through various classrooms and offices. Utilizing many castoffs from local schools gives the haunt realism. The attention to detail in each room also takes this haunt to new levels set by the already amazing haunts within the collection of Cedar Point. Scare Zones

Picture
Blood on the Bayou
Location:
 Dragster Midway
Debut: 2011
Blood on the Bayou transports guests to the haunted swamps of Louisiana. This outdoor scare zone walkthrough starts with guests being treated to the Southern drawl of the "swamp colonel" who wastes no time in setting the mood of this walk through. Some of the first scenes revolve around swamp farmers and butchers who are preparing their latest catches. Next you'll venture past some of the locals of this swamp village who are always up for entertaining new guests. Keep your eyes open, you may even spot some former inhabitants of Millennium Island when the paddle boats used to be the main form of transportation around these parts. In the following area, it seems as if you have ventured too far into the woods meeting voodoo priests and military outdoorsmen. The final stage is a southern cemetery where anything can appear.

Utilizing fog, gobo projectors, complex scenery, theatrical lighting and props from the defunct Paddlewheel Excursion, Blood on the Bayou creates a convincing and immersing experience. Nestled under Iron Dragon it follows a path that starts around the Top Thrill Dragster unload station, weaves its way through the woods and eventually along the banks of the river surrounding the newly named Adventure Island. The path finishes under Dragster's launch and exits adjacent to the entrance of TTD.

Cornstalkers
Location:
 Thunder Canyon
Debut: 2008
Other Info: Previous Haunts: Werewolf Canyon (2003-2007)
CornStalkers is a psychological masterpiece where your mind will begin to question what's real and what is your own imagination. CornStalkers has a simple premise using the enclosed canyon of Thunder Canyon and thousands of dried cornstalks. The haunt starts with one of the mutated farmers who takes the time to verbally psyche each member of your party out. After this terrifying experience, you walk across a wood bridge outfitted with cornstalk walls which eventually leads into the descent into the canyon. From this point forward you and your party on on your own navigating the rows of cornstalks. At points there are forks in the path which force you to make decisions and can even lead to your party being separated. At any point one of the mutated farmers or the cornstalk monsters can pop out of the cornstalk walls. Many times they are almost invisible to spot. In addition, any slight wind blowing through the stalks could make you believe something is there when its really not. The haunt finishes with a trip to the second floor of the petting zoo barn that has some horrific seems of farmers being mutilated.

CornStalkers is more like an indoor haunt but outside. It usually has quite a long queue and does have a person at the entrance controlling the flow of people. The haunt is best when it is quiet and when only small groups are let through at a time. The haunt's simplicity is its best feature. The endless "hallway" of stalks leads the mind to imagine more than what is there. However, the haunt also utilizes some simple scenery and props in addition to fog, gobo projectors and theatrical lighting. The haunt begins at the entrance to Thunder Canyon and exits through the petting zoo.

Cut Throat Cove
Location:
 Maverick Infield
Debut: 2012
Other Info: Previous Incarnation: Terror Island on Millennium Island
With the addition of Dinosaurs Alive! in 2012, the perennial favorite Terror Island was moved from Millennium Island to the Maverick infield. Have no fear matey, all your favorites ghosts and ghouls of the deep are back and better than ever. The cove starts about the same as Terror Island with an abundance of crates spaced as though to simulate the dock of a popular trading port. As usual the pirates of the deep are always happy to welcome you to their humble abode in a way that only a pirate can. As you continue down the path you'll begin to realize the Terror Island was just a small pirate conclave, but The Cove is a whole pirate settlement. As you explore further into the settlement, you'll see pirate villages, shipwrecks, and a few monstrous surprises.

Cut Throat Cove is an outdoor walk through that utilizes fog, gobo projectors, theatrical lighting, and elaborate sets to create the pirate settlement. It starts between Mavericks entrance and the train station and exits through Thunder Canyon's exit. Many people were highly critical of the placement of Dinosaurs Alive! and that was only further inflamed by the announcement that Terror Island would be moving as well. Many pointed out that the fog used was held in by the natural foliage and create a perfect atmosphere for a walk through haunt. This element would be lost being that Maverick's infield is pretty much open. However, the added length and added props somewhat made up for the move.

Maniacal Mechanical Screamworks
Location:
 Frontier Trail
Debut: 2011
Closed: 2017
Other Info: Previous Haunt: Fright Zone (2001-2010)
The world of Screamworks is like stepping into an alternate reality. In this world the power of steam and not electricity reigns supreme. Slightly Victorian in nature, the residents of Screamworks are amalgamations of humans and mechanical gears. Enter Screamworks from the north and you are greated by a giant copper skull that has thousands of laser beams pouring out of its mechanical eye. Also the skull has a personality all it's own and has been known to harass those guests brave enough to enter Screamworks. Once inside, you'll meet more residents that are also dark reflections of Victorian ladies and gentlemen. Between the famous "sliders" and the mechanical version of Jack the Ripper, you'll need to stay alert to make it out alive. Along the route you'll also see mechanical constructs such as pressurized vats, evil giant ducks and an airship.

Maniacal Mechanical Screamworks is based on the genre of steam punk which portrays an alternate reality where steam power and Victorian style of dress never faded away but only evolved into higher forms. Screamworks may be considered a "starter" haunt for families because it is usually less intense than most of the other haunts at Cedar Point. Screamworks is also a two way haunt that can be accessed from either end of Frontier Trail. It also utilizes theatrical lighting, fog, light scenery, and gobo projectors throughout the walk through.

Eternity Infirmary
Location:
 Former Frontier Carousel
Debut: 2011
Closed: 2016
Type: Haunted House
Other Info: Previous Haunts: Erie Manor (1997-2000), U.R. Dade School of Mortuary Science (2001-2009), Dr. D. Mented Asylum for the Criminally Insane (2010)
The first sight you will see before entering the Infirmary is a vintage ambulance that not only has flashing lights but also a siren that wails intermittently. Once inside the Eternity Infirmary you are "treated" to a whole host of frights and scares as you explore this deadly hospital. Starting you witness many ghastly scenes of death along with spooky medical posters and signage. At many points, the dead on the gurney prove that they still have some life in them to make one last attempt to bring you down with them. Along the way you'll also meet some of the more intense patients that have been tied down or handcuffed for both your protection and theirs.

The Eternity Infirmary is probably the most traditional of the haunted houses at Cedar Point. It utilizes intense scenes and props but also the traditional method of capitalizing on darkness and tight hallways to create a sense of being trapped. The haunt also utilizes theatrical lighting, intense scenery, and hydraulic animatronics to blur the lines of reality. In 2010, the haunt was re-themed from a mortuary to an insane asylum. Cedar Point came under fire from mental health advocates especially the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Ohio because they claimed the name inspired fear and misunderstanding to the general public in regards to those who have mental illness. Cedar Point the following year changed the name to be a general hospital.

Eden Musee
Location:
 Mean Streak Infield
Debut: 2012
Closed: 2016
Type: Haunted House
Cedar Point returns to its history once again for this indoor haunt. The Eden Musee is a new take on the classic wax museum. Entering into the museum you'll notice this not your normal attraction. The first room is a circular room that contains a number of different historical wax displays such as one of Marie Antoinette. In the center is a strange looking wax fountain. As you progress further into the hallway, a grim realization comes upon you, many of these wax figures just don't look lifelike. At any turn these figures can suddenly spring to life and make you their next victim. If you try to run, you'll come upon other torture devices and scenes that are more grisly than the last. One of the most harrowing is the lifeless body and disfigured face of the father of the famous axe murderess, Lizzie Borden. If you make it past this, you enter into the inner workings of the museum. First you'll have to not be caught by the wrapped victims who have not been as lucky as you thus far. Escaping that, you enter into the preparation sections of the museum, navigating the storage area and then the wax boiler rooms. It becomes obvious that the reason why this wax museum is so realistic is that the unlucky guests become the next exhibits.

Eden Musee is a homage to the original Eden Musee that appeared at Cedar Point near where the Jack Aldrich Theatre currently stands. The Eden Musee operated at Cedar Point from 1919 until 1966 with only a few interruptions within that timeframe. This haunt though contains no real wax figures but representations of them using mannequins. The haunt uses elaborate scenery to recreate the inside of wax museum. In addition, it uses strobe lights, fog, and theatrical lighting. As you walk through you may also find antique chandeliers from Hotel Breakers and pieces from the queue of the former Disaster Transport.

CarnEvil
Type:
 Scare Zone
Location: Camp Snoopy
Run: 2004-2014
The oldest scare zone walkthrough but arguably still the best. The dark circus still features a ringmaster caller at each of the two entrances. Once inside the freaks reign supreme. Of course you will find the standard assortment of clowns but you'll also find creatures of all kinds. Monkeys, contortionists, and pugilists are just a few of those that you may encounter. As you traverse the path of Camp Snoopy, these creatures are hiding on all sides. They could be behind garbage cans, in tents, laying on the ground, or even right behind you. You may also find previous guests of CarnEvil along the way that weren't so lucky. Many skeletons can be found playing arcade games, strapped to the wheel of death, or playing dart throwing at skulls.

CarnEvil utilizes fog, gobo projectors, tents, theatrical lighting, props from the former Kiddy Kingdom, and other simple scenery. CarnEvil's original location was on the Wicked Twister Midway turning onto midway in front of Joe Cool Cafe (former Macaroni's). It moved in 2008 to reportedly free up the beach resort gate so that families with young children could exit without fear of....fear. Today entrances can be found by the Dinostore gift shop and across from Gemini. CarnEvil is a two way walk through which can sometimes make it difficult for the screamsters to properly place themselves and reset their scares. At the very least it does require them to become creative on a nightly basis to adapt to changing crowd conditions. Oversized crowds also present problems due to there not being any entrance control on the walk through.

Club Blood
Type:
 Haunted House
Location: Main Gate Storage
Run: 2008-2012
Club Blood is an indoor haunt that is designed to be a bit more edgy than the rest of the offerings at Cedar Point. The entrance and queue are themed with rope, cones and police horses providing the physical queue. Outside the entrance to the haunt there is also run down cars that have definitely seen better days. The theme presented is akin to attending an underground rave at a warehouse. As the bouncer opens the entrance door you find yourself in a dark back alley type hallway. All along the walls concert posters and photos are plastered. Garbage cans and warehouse barrels create a disorientating maze. Strobe lights cause further disorientation as you begin to realize that this isn't any normal rave. Little hints begin to give away that this rave is indeed populated by gothic horrors and vampiric dancers. By this point, you enter the Club Blood and the lighting shifts to a more club like atmosphere. Cage dancers try to lure you into their deadly game while other vampires try to bite you as you are distracted. The final scene takes you to the VIP lounge where all gets are off. Can you survive the most memorizing of the vampires or will you become just another victim?

Club Blood is recommended for more mature audiences due to its enclosed nature but also more adult themes. It heavily utilizes strobe lights, theatrical lighting, fog, and elaborate scenery to create an overall disorientating yet exhilarating experience. The entrance to Club Blood is next to Hurricane Hannah's. The haunt utilizes warehouse space to recreate the underground club atmosphere. Denizens of the club have also been known to taunt those spectators too scared to actually enter sometimes going as far as chasing them on the Main Midway.

Fear Faire
Type:
 Scare Zone
Location: Pavilions near Raptor
Run: 2006-2014
Travel back in time to an age where magic, dragons and knights reigned. However, this trip is not one back to the classic Arthurian legend but rather a trip to what can only best be called the Dark Ages. Entering into the Faire, you will be greeted by a great dragon that warns you to turn around. Many will indeed heed its advice while other will continue their sojourn into the dark castle. From this point forward all reason is suspended and you enter into pure chaos. Twists and turns will confuse you as you try to navigate through this maze while creatures, knights, and peasants all try to expel you, the interloper, from their realm. It is quite easy to lose your way and have to double back to find the correct exit. Woes continue when you run into medieval torture devices. At one point you exit the dark castle and move through a gypsy encampment. Expecting a rest is a mistake as the gypsies are even more offended of your presence. Entering back into the castle you'll find even more dark monks, dishonored knights and creatures of all sorts. Finally you make it to the exit but not before you have to run a final gauntlet of dark mages that wish your doom.

Under the right circumstances, Fear Faire can be the best haunted attraction at Cedar Point. The pavilions on a calm night hold the fog in and visibility becomes so poor that it is difficult to see your hand in front of your own face. This obviously gives the Screamsters awesome ability to pop out of nowhere to scare. In addition, it adds greatly to the terrifying psychological effects of the walk through. When first opened, Fear Faire was a two way walk through. Now, it has been made into a one way course that begins next to Raptor and exits by the front Sky Ride station. This also has increased the effectiveness of the haunt by allowing for Screamsters to be able to set particular scares. Fear Faire also utilizes theatrical lighting, elaborate sets, gobo projectors to enhance the mood of the walk through.
